evidence for impact
Bright Impact is a science-based consultancy working with mission-driven organizations and companies to use data, evidence, and expert knowledge to inform and strengthen their decisions and actions.
The work is primarily led by Dr. Madeleine McKinnon with additional expertise as needed by regular collaborators including Dr Samantha Cheng (AMNH), Hannah Gregg (media impact consultant and campaign director), and Leo Bottrill (MapHubs).
collaborative & pragmatic
My processes are evidence-informed and results-based. Where possible, I build from existing data, tools, and systems that are established and rigorously tested. I employ participatory and mixed methods; and pursue interdisciplinary and non-traditional collaborations wherever possible.
I am passionate about building and leveraging new and innovative data and technology to accelerate and enhance results. I have an appetite for experimentation and learning by doing. I value honest reporting and open science.
I share what I learn, both what works well and what could be improved.
global & interdisciplinary
I care deeply about nature and environmental justice. In practical terms, I am an expert facilitator and convenor, strategic advisor, independent evaluator, team leader, and collaborative researcher.
I’ve conducted ecological field work in tropical forests and mangroves, European natural and modified landscapes and rivers, and high desert and canyon ecosystems in the US Southwest. I’ve implemented social science fieldwork with land managers, farmers, fishers, tribal leaders, policy makers and funders, managers, and scientists working on sustainability around the world.
I’ve applied my expertise to diverse issue areas and solution spaces including: biodiversity conservation, climate change, sustainability, poverty alleviation, climate adaptation, food security, sustainable agriculture, ocean health, environmental education, environmental equity and justice, organizational effectiveness, social policy and community programs, and technology for good.
